Brass City Charter School

Educating Waterbury's Children

Our Story

In the spring of 2013, a group of inspired Waterbury educators and citizens applied to the State of Connecticut for a public charter school that would serve Waterbury’s children in grades pre-K through 8. Their petition was successful, and Brass City Charter School (BCCS) opened its doors to 114 students in grades Pre-K through 1st that fall in the former St. Margaret’s School building.

BCCS provides a free education to Waterbury children in grades Pre-K through 8th. This year we graduate our first 8th grade class. Total enrollment is 360 students.

The school's educational philosophy incorporates a rigorous academic curriculum that includes immersion in character strengths conducive to success.

OUR MISSION

To provide a rigorous academic and holistic social-emotional learning program that eliminates the achievement gap for under-resourced students and ensures all students soar academically and develop as people of character who lead meaningful and productive lives, and contribute to their communities.

OUR VALUES

  • We educate the whole child; academically, socially, and emotionally.
  • All children, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, religion, ethnicity, or gender can grow, achieve, and be successful, happy, and healthy citizens.
  • Education, incorporating rigor and compassion, is the key to ending the cycle of poverty.
  • Coming to school each day and working hard is the path to educational success.
  • Ability and competence grow with effort and persistence.
  • Parents are vital to their children’s success.
  • Community partnerships and involvement are critical to the life of the school.
  • The school environment must be safe, calm, and responsive.

  • SCHOOL SHOULD BE A JOYFUL EXPERIENCE!
