Welcome to Brass City Charter School! 

BCCS has the honor of being Waterbury’s only charter school. In addition, it is part of a national movement to bring innovation and accountability to our public school system. 

In 2020, we became a fully rolled out pre-k through grade 8 school and celebrated our first eighth grade graduation in the spring of that school year.

At BCCS, we recognize that the number one factor impacting student achievement is teacher quality. We seek skilled, intelligent, warm, compassionate, and motivated individuals who share our Mission and Values.

Our teachers have dedicated time in their schedules several times per week for collaboration with grade team partners, and the Deans provide ongoing support and frequent feedback to teachers. New teachers participate in Connecticut’s TEAM (Teacher Education and Mentoring) program.

"In my initial interview at Brass City Charter School I was asked many questions about curriculum, standards, teaching style, experience, and more. But one question stood out more than the others. “Do you wholeheartedly believe that ALL students can learn?” My answer, of course, was yes. If I didn’t believe firmly that all students could learn, there would not have been a place for me at BCCS. That was clear from the first time I walked in the door. It is the fundamental belief that binds all BCCS teachers and staff together in unity.

BCCS is a unique school. I have taught in both private and public schools, urban and rural, and no school has had the same level of devotion to student well-being. Every teacher and staff member at BCCS puts the students first. Teachers take the time to know their students on a personal level, understanding their likes and dislikes, their fears, failures, and victories. Administrators put student needs at the forefront of every decision and conversation. Class time is spent not only learning reading, writing, and arithmetic, but learning to appreciate and respect one another so that every child feels welcomed and important.

Many schools pride themselves on placing student learning first. And while I certainly believe BCCS places a great deal of emphasis on student learning (evidenced by the third grader’s state test scores), there is much more to it than that. BCCS cares about the WHOLE child. BCCS seeks to develop students with strong academic skills, artistic expression, health awareness, and emotional intelligence. The teachers and staff at BCCS care about how each child feels – whether they are comfortable, frustrated, excited, lonely, or any number of other emotions. They know that students’ feelings affect every area of their lives, including academics, and they make it their mission to help them identify, explore, and regulate those emotions. They know that teaching students to develop emotional intelligence will have the greatest positive impact on students’ lives in the long run.

And so, my departure from BCCS is bittersweet. I am moving toward the new path of motherhood with great joy, but I leave behind my BCCS family with sadness. I have learned a great deal from the teachers, administrators, and students. Brass City Charter School has been a huge support to me both professionally and personally, and it hurts my heart to leave. But I go knowing that each child who attends BCCS will have a life-changing experience – a positive catalyst in his or her life – and I feel a sense of pride that I was able to be a part of it."
